Associate Professor Dr Shawn Sobers explores ways of approaching Black history. Shawn will discuss the purpose of exploring Black history – from personal revelation, redressing the balance, awareness & activism, and to be part of a wider national narrative. He will expand on and challenge history in the way it has been shared and will delve into questions such as whose history and to what purpose. He will cover topics including: – The importance of intangible and intergenerational Black history – The significance of pre-Windrush Black presence in Britain? – Making history relevant in the present.
